About Ukraine

Flag of Ukraine

A story of the Ukraineian nation numbers hundreds of years and dates back to early 9th century, when Ukraine was a centre of East Slavs culture. During that time a state, known as Kyivska Russ, was the most powerful nation in Eastern Europe with a capital in Kyiv (present capital of Ukraine).

Since that time and up to the end of 20th century Ukraine was divided among different countries and empires. Most part of the past century Ukraine spent as a part of Soviet Union. In 1991 Ukraine became an independent European country.

Ukraine is situated in the south-eastern part of Central Europe and has its own territory, government, national emblem, flag and anthem. Ukraine today is a country of 46 million people, most of whom are ethnic Ukraineians. It borders on Russia, Byelorussia, Moldova, Slovakia, Roumania, Hungary and Poland on land and Russia, Georgia, Bulgaria, Roumania and Turkey on sea.The territory of Ukraine is mostly a level, treeless plain, calls "steppe". There are the Crimean Mountains in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians in the west, but they are not very high. Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods can still be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. Kiev and Cherkassy lie in the midst of Ukraineian southernmost pine forest. The main Ukraineian river is the Dnieper. It is one of the longest European rivers and one of the republic's main sources of hydroelectric power. The Dnieper and its tributary the Ross had been the cradle of the Ukraineian and Russian people in time immemorial. The climate of the country is moderate. Winter is rather mild, with no severe frosts but with regular snowfalls everywhere except the south. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. The average winter temperature varies -20 Centigrade in the north to -3-5 in the south. Summer is quite hot and dry, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The fertile black soil is well watered in spring and autumn and gets plenty of sunshine in summer.

mbbs in ukrianeAs a country with a favourable geographical position (situated between Asia and Europe), Ukraine was always viewed by foreign investors as a country with better economic conditions, than other republics of the Soviet Union. Today this European country has the potential to be one of the region's leaders in volume of foreign direct investment and portfolio investment.

The country is free of nuclear weapons. It is considered one of the safest places in the world with second largest army in Europe and one of lowest crime rates on Earth. Professional army helps as well supports Ukraine's image as a key peacemaker in the world. The country's troops were deployed in Kosovo, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Iraq and other countries.

For centuries, Ukraine was recognized as a country offering unique opportunities for industrial, technological, trade and agricultural development. In 2007 the Ukraineian stock market recorded the second highest growth in the world of 130 percent. Ukraineian IT market ranked fourth after Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic, with almost 40 percent growth and over $3.4 billion in volume, according to IDC survey. Ukraine now appears in Gaming Industry's Top 12 European Countries.

Ukraine produces almost all types of transportation vehicles and spacecrafts. Antonov airplanes for example have become a symbol of Ukraine, stressing on the country's strength in this field of aviation. As an active participant of global space exploration, Ukraine has launched a number of satellites.

With less than 1% of the world's population, the country has 6% of the world's physicists, mathematicians, computer programmers and other highly trained professionals. Ukraine's traditions of physical, mathematical, and programming schools are very strong. Nearly 60% of its universities have graduates with majors in these disciplines. To bridge the gap between classical education and real business and technical processes, outsourcing companies have partnered with leading universities to offer additional classes and labs for students.

Development of Ukraineian economy goes side by side with the development of country's culture and sports. Music remains a major component of Ukraineian culture. Nowadays it varies from traditional folk to contemporary rock and experimental. Elements from Ukraineian folk made their way to western music and are often recognized in song and plays of other Slavic nations.

The country's most popular sport is not doubt football. FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Shakhtar are invariable participants of European football challenges. FC Shakhtar won UEFA Cup trophy in 2009. The national team made its debut in 2006 FIFA World Cup and went as far as quarterfinals. Andrei Shevchenko - Ukraine's most honorable football player - is also one of the brightest characters of European soccer history. Boxing is also popular in the country, thanks to the Klichko brothers (most titled boxers today). Ukraine now bids to host 2018 Winter Olympic Games, and has already won the bit (together with Poland) to host Football Euro 2012.

STUDENT LIFE IN UKRAINE:

mbbs in ukraine

Ukraine is a place where studying goes beyond the classrooms. Ukraine gives you chance to enjoy intercultural life and learn from the best of the best and prosper as a globally demanded professional.

Student life in Ukraine does not differ a lot from that in other European countries. Students study, meets new people, hang out, learn new things, travel around Europe, etc. Most of the students live on campus (some rent apartments outside of it). Hostel fee usually doesn't go higher than $50 per month. Campuses have all the facilities for safe and comfort stay: libraries, hospitals, gyms, halls for concerts and other gatherings, laboratories and other training facilities, security, etc. Universities provide students with books and relevant studying materials. Libraries with computer rooms are also available. Almost every university has sports teams, which compete in various disciplines with their peers from other institutions. The most popular sport is no doubt football. Many students are also involved in KVN games (a humorous contest between faculties, universities). Participating in this kind of activity usually takes a lot of time, but if your team performs well, university administration will offer you some flexibility in attendance.

Student life in Ukraine is noticeably cheaper than life in other European countries. Depending on a city and lifestyle, average monthly budget may vary from $200 to $400. To get an idea of the costs for various things, here are some examples. Jeans of a good quality will cost $20 - $60, entrance to the night club - $5 - $10, a cinema ticket - $3 - $5, meal at a fast food restaurant - $5 - $10, vegetables and fruits - $1 - $3 per kilo, train ticket inside the country - $10 - $25. Right after admission to the university, the student is issued an international student card, which gives a discount of up to 30% for airfare and train tickets.

Studies usually take 80% - 85% of the students' time. The rest is spent on fun activities and socializing. If you are a "social butterfly" type of individual, it will be better to look for a university in a big city (Kyiv, Kharkov, Dnipropetrovs'k, etc.), with lots of pubs, night clubs, theatres, cinemas, shopping malls, etc. Those who want to combine studying and exploring of the country with its culture and traditions may apply to a University in Kyiv or Lviv. These cities are among the oldest in the country. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. It is a centre of economical, political and cultural development. Students who come to study in Ukraine and settle down have best job prospects among all. Lviv is a "western capital" of Ukraine, influenced a lot by Western European culture and lifestyle.

Besides education, Ukraine offers great entertainment opportunities. During the past years the country was visited by major world artists: A-Ha, Depeche Mode, Rammstein, Limp Bizkit, Anastasia, Christina Aguilera, Placebo, to name a few. Our nightlife offers various options for an unforgettable time. Starting from night long discos, led by top DJs; and finishing with mountain climbing, sky and scuba diving, laser gun fighting, 3d movies and auto quests. Traditional entertainment is also available. Boys can learn to ride a horse in a traditional Cossacks manner, ladies try weaving; learn how to make clothes from straw and master traditional dancing.
